Aging in Place with Wellness in Mind
Globally, our aging population has many challenges facing them on a daily basis. Everyone wants to feel, safe, secure and comfortable while living independently in their home. The past two years COVID has forced us to re-examine how wellness has impacted the livable environment because we were forced to live, work and play 24/7 in our home that was once our refuge. How were the activities of daily living impacted especially those related to wellness and the aging client?
Wanda E. Gozdz, B.S., A.S., Allied, ASID, NKBA, CAPS, CLIPP, founder and president of Golden Age Living, LLC, Deerfield Beach, Florida, is an educator, consultant and coach to business professionals who are seeking to grow their businesses or expand their market reach in Aging in Place. She recently received the 2020 Affiliate of the Year Award from Decorators and Designers Association of Canada, DDA and was named the 2019 CAPS Designee of the Year to her long list of credentials, including being named the CAPS Educator of the Year in 2014. As a master instructor, she teaches Universal Design and Certified Aging in Place designation(CAPS) courses in addition to providing seminars for builders, remodelers, occupational therapists, interior designers, durable medical equipment specialists and other professionals who serve the “Aging in Place” market both nationally and internationally. She is also a residential interior designer, author, an accomplished educator and speaker as well as an award-winning advocate for seniors. Her goal is twofold: to inform consumers as they age on how to adapt their homes to their changing lifestyles and to educate professionals who serve the senior market on how to help clients and their families to “age in place.” Her area of expertise is providing assessments of living environments. Because of her mother’s determination to stay in her own home “forever,” Gozdz was inspired to pursue a degree in interior design and became a Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS). Today, she is a Master Instructor for the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and a subject matter expert for Aging in Place and Universal Design. She currently serves on NAHB’s Board of Trustees Remodeler’s Council and as a National Delegate to NAHB for Builders Association of South Florida and servers as the South Florida Chapter President 2021-2022, for the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID)..
